Connecting to UO Secure WiFi network prior to logging in to Windows

When logging in to a computer not connected to the University of Oregon Campus Network (UONet) via a wired connection, you will need to connect to UO Secure, the campus secure wireless network prior to logging in to the computer.  This is the only wireless network that offers UONet connections.  All other wireless connections (i.e. UO Guest, UO Wireless, etc.) do not have connections to UONet and will not provide access to any campus network resources (i.e. File Servers, Web based applications, etc.).

Windows will allow you to login to a computer not connected to UONet using Cached Credentials.  This allows you to use the computer at home, on a plane or any other location where network connectivity is not available.  However, you will not have any connection to UO provided resources.

To have a connection to UONet and UO provided resources, it is important to connect to UO Secure prior to logging in to the computer.  By logging on to UO Secure prior to logging in to the computer, you are making a connection to UONet, just like a wired connection, which allows network resources and processes to run at login.  These network resources and processes are responsible for important things like Computer Security, Operating System updates and environment, Drive Mappings and other maintenance and security functions.

These instructions will walk you through the steps of connecting to UO Secure prior to logging in to the computer.

  1. At the login screen, ensure you see the Wireless Networks Available icon  in the lower right-hand corner.
  2. Click on the Wireless Networks Available icon  in the lower right-hand corner.
  3. Click on UO Secure.
  4. If this is a device assigned to you and you are the only user of this device, you can check the box that says Connect automatically.  If this is a shared device, do not click this box.  Click the Connect button.
  5. Enter your DuckID (without the @uoregon.edu) and your DuckID Password and click Next.
  6. UO Secure will authenticate you.
  7. Once authentication is successful, you will see the  icon in the Networks pane.
    1.
  8. You are now connected to UO Secure.  You can enter your DuckID and Password in the Windows Login Screen and login to the computer with full UONet connections.Â
